Heroes of the Storm was originally conceived as a StarCraft II map editor showcase, then reinvented as a slightly more robust standalone, then renamed, then consigned to more than a year of worrisomely silent obscurity. I was lucky enough to win a Closed Beta key in a giveaway one week ago, giving me the opportunity to jump into the WarCraft universe to find out if Hearthstone: Heroes of WarCraft can satisfy both CCG players as well as avid WarCraft fans…. Every new player starts the game with the Mage Deck in Practice Mode and you have to defeat different computer controlled heroes to unlock Play Mode, where you battle it out against other real people in an automated matchmaking system.

The game is turn base and randomly selects which player will have the first turn, however, if you do not get the first turn, you are awarded with an extra card. Every card requires a specific amount of resources to be used, which come in the form of Mana Crystals. You start the match with one Mana Crystal and every time you end the turn, you gain another one up to a limit of ten in total.

Every time it becomes your turn to act, another card from your deck becomes available to use, further bolstering your arsenal of creatures and spells. You can spend all your Mana Crystals every turn, as they replenish with the end of a round. Hearthstone: Heroes of WarCraft did seem a bit simplistic at the start of my journey, but it quickly became apparent that it is far more complicated than I could have imagined.

There are nine different heroes to choose from boasting their personalized decks with creatures and abilities. The game revolves around collecting new cards and building an especially strong custom deck.

Structured PvP is a mode which allows competition on an even footing. The attributes , runes , and sigils from a character’s PvE equipment are not used in structured PvP maps. Instead, equipment attributes are normalized, and players select a rune set, a sigil set, a PvP-specific amulet, and a set of specializations in the PvP Build panel. This build is maintained separately from the player’s normal PvE or WvW build, and is automatically applied whenever a character enters the structured PvP lobby map.

This mechanic allows players to be on an equal playing field with the same attributes, skills, and equipment options as other players. Players need to equip chest, legs and foot armor to achieve the base armor value, but hands, shoulders and head may be ignored. Two teams are matched up against each other. In a standard match, the objective is to be the first team to reach points.

Points are awarded through holding capture points, killing enemy players, or completing map-specific objectives. There are at least 3 capture points on each map, and when captured, each location grants one point every two seconds. Each player kill grants five points.
